Luke Kahler's Eagle Scout Project
At our March chapter meeting Luke Kahler (the son of one of our chapter members) attended our meeting and made his presentation regarding an Eagle Scout project at the Susquehanna State Park region along the west bank Susquehanna River between Shures Landing Road and Stafford Road known as the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways trail. A motion was made at the meeting to pass the hat around in an effort to raise some money to assist with Luke’s project. As always the members in attendance came through with flying colors. Thus again living up to the motto as the “Greatest Dam Chapter In The World”. Included is the correspondence that Luke has sent bringing us up to date as to the status and projected time frame for completing his project.
At Susquehanna State Park I will be removing and replacing 8 Wayside Exhibit Signs and 2 Tall Standing Wayside Exhibit Signs and 1 information kiosk and paint them to look like the existing signs, along the approximately 2 ¾ mile stretch of the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways trail. I will also be placing crush and run around the signs. I will be using volunteers to help such as fellow Boy Scouts, friends, and family. I am hoping to start this project by the end of April 2010. I will be acquiring funds by selling tree seedlings and recycling scrap metal.
This project will benefit the Susquehanna State Park region along the west bank Susquehanna River between Shures Landing Road and Stafford Road known as the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways trail. This project will greatly benefit Susquehanna State Park because bicyclists, joggers, anglers, and walkers use this portion of the trail daily. I have walked along the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways trail and found that the information kiosk at the northern entrance and Wayside Exhibit signs along the trail are in need of replacement, due to vandalism and weathering. The signs and kiosk have great information containing facts about geology, botany, wildlife, and the history surrounding the Susquehanna River. With the signs and the kiosk in disrepair, trail-users cannot benefit from the information posted regarding this historic and natural landmark. I selected this project because my family and I frequently walk or fish the area and learned a lot from the Wayside Exhibit signs, and I noticed that the signs were in disrepair. This gave me the idea to fix the signs so future generations can benefit from the information on the sign.
The installation date for the signs will be Saturday April 17, 2010 and the times are 7:30am to 2:00pm. The meeting place will be at Fishermans Park right below the Conowingo Dam in front of the trail (end of Shures Landing Road). Thanks again for your generosity.
Thanks,
Luke Kahler

Hi
Mr. Sebo, just wanted to keep you up to date on my Eagle Scout project, at the
HOG meeting in early March we had talked about an aluminum can drive at the
dealer and selling trees by email to the members, because of the generosity of
the HOG, I have raised enough funds to complete my project so I won't have to do
any more fundraising. Also, my project will be on April 9, 10, 11 and 17. The
majority of the work will be on the site at the north end of the Greenway Trail
on April 17, rain date April 18, this is at the end of Shures Landing Rd.,
that’s the road that takes you to the base of the Conowingo Dam. Some of the
members sounded interested in helping that day, if so, they can bring shovels
and digging bars to install the signs and Kiosk, which we will build on the
previous workdays. Thank you again; the Chesapeake HOG has helped my life goal
of achieving Eagle Scout become a reality.

Hi Mr. Sebo, just wanted to let you know I completed my Eagle Project this past weekend, we installed the 8 low profile signs, 2 uprite signs and 1 information kiosk. Now I have about 6 hours worth of write up to do before I can submit the final book to be approved by the BSA. On the attachment is a close up picture of one of the windows of the kiosk, if you get a chance stop by the Greenway Trail the kiosk is right at the end of Shures Landing Rd. ( just off of Shuresville Rd. and Rt. 1, (about 1 mile from Chesapeake HD.) I have posted pictures of the project on the kiosk. Thanks again Luke Kahler
